Today we learnt about entrepreneurship. An entrepreneur is someone who is innovative, a risk taker, inventor and a leader. They will start their own business with a desire to make their own money and be successful.
An example of an entrepreneur which we looked at is Oprah Winfrey. She was born into poverty and suffered abuse in her childhood. She began working for a radio show at the age of 19, part time as a cohost for an evening show. As she became more popular she was moved to the daytime show and from here she progressed to tv. In her twenties she started up her own production company and at the age of 31 she started her own tv talk show which aired from 1986-2011. She also suffered from depression during her twenties so we could say that resilience is a valuable trait for an entrepreneur. At the age of 32 she became a millionaire. Most famous for her talk shows, Oprah is also coauthor to five books, publishes magazines and does a lot of charity work. Now at 59 years old, Oprah has a net worth of 2.8 billion dollars.

Hi I’m Emma and I’m from Northern Ireland. Northern Ireland is a small country with a population of approx 1.8 million. The capital city is Belfast. Popular tourist hotspots include Giants Causeway and the Titanic Centre. There are a number of famous people who have come out of Northern Ireland including Liam Neeson, Rory McIlroy and Snow Patrol.
I am a member of the Young Farmers’ Clubs of Ulster which was founded in 1927, with the first club in Limavady. Over 80 years later there are now around 60 clubs with approx. 3000 members. Members are aged from 12- 25 and they take part in a variety of events and competitions delivered under 3 main categories: agriculture; culture and the arts; and sports and social events.
This morning, we each gave a presentation on our country, organisation and a local rural business to the group. I found it very interesting to learn about the different countries and even the different ways people presented their information. I particularly enjoyed Norway’s with them including the video for ‘the cabin’. Worth a watch.

Over the coming week I’m hoping to gain confidence around new people, take part in new and different activities and gain knowledge of entrepreneurship, diversification and how to be successful in business.
